Happy August! While the month of August can feel like the ‘Sunday of Summer’ don’t give yourself the “Sunday Scaries!”  You still have all month to create your last memories of summer ‘23. While we know our residents love everything about the incredible Kingsley community, we also know getting away can be incredibly refreshing. The good news is that plenty of getaways are perfect for weekend trips and less than two hours away from Alexandria, VA.

Washington, DC: Our nation’s capital is an amazing choice for a quick getaway for Kingsley community members. Visit the National Mall, Washington Monument, Museum of National History, and so many other incredible historical landmarks. Then, you can spend some time outside of the city and in nature by walking, running, or renting a bike to travel Mont Vernon Trail.

Annapolis, Maryland: Once dubbed the “Athens of America,” this historic spot draws in visitors looking to explore its boutique- and restaurant-lined streets or experience the magic of the Chesapeake Bay by boat. Discover local museums, cafes, boutiques, and then set up a picnic at Sandy Point State Park or Quiet Waters Park

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia: With rushing waterfalls and rocky mountain peaks this national park is the ideal location to get away from the city. If you feel like roughing it under the stars, the park offers five campgrounds to choose from and backcountry camping is allowed with a permit. Or, kill two birds with one stone by booking accommodations in the nearby town of Luray.

The United States Independence Day is annually celebrated on the fourth of July. A federal holiday in the US since 1941 but the history and tradition of the celebration goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution.

It was July 2nd, 1776 when the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence. Two days later, on July 4th, delegates of all thirteen colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. Then, from 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birthday of American independence. Celebrations for July 4th range from large festivities such as fireworks, parades, and concerts to casual get-togethers like barbeques and beach days with family, friends, and loved ones.

Not only is The Kingsley celebrating Independence Day this July but also the birthday of our incredible city of Alexandria. The City of Alexandria is going to celebrate its 274th birthday, as well as the USA’s 247th birthday, on Saturday, July 8th. This event will feature a performance by the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and a grand finale fireworks display at 9:30 pm. It is a big birthday bash with desserts, cupcakes, local vendors, and live music!

The Kingsley is proud to celebrate the birthdays our both our country and our city of Alexandria.

Here at The Kingsley, we consider ourselves lucky to be located in a city as charming and lively as Alexandria. From the rich history to the natural beauty, there are so many reasons why Alexandria is the perfect place to call home.

Located just a few miles outside Washington D.C., Alexandria offers easy access to the capital while still maintaining a suburban feel. Residents get the best of both worlds with a multitude of transportation options, including a metro system, Amtrak station, and access to major highways. The close proximity to D.C. also means Alexandria is privy to stunning views of the Potomac River, especially along Waterfront Park. The sights of the river are visible along sweeping green banks, perfect for picnics, relaxing walks, and enjoying the natural beauty of Alexandria. Hiking is also a big outdoor activity here, as the Mount Vernon Trail is easily accessible from Jones Point Park.

Alexandria is also steeped in American history, and is home to many American landmarks, including George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. The Carlyle House, an eighteenth-century historic house, and the Torpedo Factory Art Center, are also popular destinations for tour visits. Alexandria also boasts an impressively intact Old Town district, where visitors can experience the past and stroll along cobblestone streets, see well-preserved colonial architecture, and witness firsthand the history we are so proud of.

Alexandria is also bustling with plenty of local events and festivals, including a weekly farmers’ market and an annual Old Town Art Festival. There’s rarely a shortage of things to do, including concerts, parades, and seasonal festivals. Local night life is also a big draw for residents, as Alexandria is known for its diverse food scene. Sample cuisines from a variety of cultures and enjoy excellent seafood like oysters, lobster, and more.

Our community here in Alexandria has so many incredible qualities, from our outdoor scene to our beloved history and culture. We can’t recommend living here enough, and we hope you experience everything that makes our city so special.

In May, there are two very important holidays to celebrate this month. The Kingsley encourages our residents to take part in celebrating Mother’s Day and honoring Memorial Day.

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, founded by Anna Marie Jarvis in the United States. The start of Mother’s Day as we know it now was actually started by Anna Jarvis’ mother, Ann Jarvis.

Later in life, Anna Jarvis did not appreciate the commercialization of Mother’s Day. This year, celebrate Mother’s Day the old-fashioned way at The Kingsley. You don’t need flowers and fancy dinners to show appreciation for your Mom this year. Make homemade cards, make her breakfast in bed, or do extra chores around the house. Figure out the best ways to celebrate your Mother at no cost this year.

This year, Memorial Day is honored on May 29, 2023. The Kingsley is proud to celebrate Memorial Day as a federal United States holiday that honors America’s military members who have lost their lives in service to our country. Always observed on the last Monday of the month of May.

For a lot of Americans, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Many people attend parades, go to the beach, or have barbeques with family and friends- which can be hosted right here at The Kingsley. But at its core, Memorial Day is a yearly remembrance for those who have sacrificed their lives in the military service.

On March 8th, we celebrate International Women's Day, a day dedicated to the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all around the world. At The Kingsley, we believe that gender equality and women's empowerment are essential to creating a better world. That's why we are thrilled to celebrate this important day with our residents, staff, and community.

To honor this day, we have put together some ideas for how you can celebrate and show your support for women:

Support women-owned businesses: Shop at local stores owned by women, or order from restaurants and cafes owned by women. You can also look for organizations that support women entrepreneurs and make a donation.

Attend an event: Attend a virtual or in-person event dedicated to women's empowerment and gender equality. This could be a panel discussion, a workshop, a movie screening, or a concert.

Educate yourself: Take some time to read and learn about the struggles and achievements of women throughout history and around the world. You can also learn about the current state of women's rights and gender equality in your community and beyond.

Volunteer: Support a local women's organization by volunteering your time or making a donation. You can also organize a fundraiser or donation drive to support women in need.

At The Kingsley, we are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all of our residents. We believe that every individual deserves respect, equal rights, and equal opportunities. On this International Women's Day, let's celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of women, and let's continue to work towards a more equal and just world for all.

It’s the most romantic day of the year, Kingsley residents! But, seriously, no pressure.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be the end-all-be-all of romance. It can be simply a great day to enjoy with those you love. Simply spending quality time and having fun with a loved one in our cozy community room will have you feeling the love. There are plenty of ways to show your love this Valentine’s Day.

While gifts are a traditional part of the holiday, they don’t have to be budget-breaking. Sure, places like Target overflow with adorably-themed pillows, candles, wreaths, and the works. But what could be better than creating something with your own two hands?

Make a DIY Etched Wine Glass: Surprise your sweetheart with a home-cooked meal and a personalized etched wine glass, which is actually much easier to make than it seems!

Heart-Shaped Elbow Patch: Wear your heart on your sleeve, literally. Make it yourself or for your Valentine, using an old sweater or two and scrap fabric (or even paper)!

Lipstick Art: All you need is a piece of white card stock and shades of lipstick for this fun-themed wall art.

Valentine’s Day is all about love. Spend the day in Alexandria, VA, or cuddle inside, as long as you are surrounded by love then there’s no way to go wrong.

Thanksgiving is a national United States holiday that takes place every third Thursday of November, this year on November 24th.

The first Thanksgiving dates back to 1621, when the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag shared an autumn feast. Then, for more than two centuries, Thanksgiving was celebrated on different days by the US colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

According to the National Turkey Federation, 90% of American households eat turkey for Thanksgiving- whether it be roasted, baked, or deep-fried. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

Parades have also become a common aspect of the holiday. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is the largest and most famous, attracting up to 3 million in-person spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television viewing crowd.

As in the name, Thanksgiving is dedicated to giving thanks. So, this year take an extra moment to figure out what you are most grateful for.

The patio at Dovetail 14th Street Restaurant might be a little more crowded during the warm months, but it’s designed to serve as a year-round seating option for guests. With climate control and a permanent bar situated at one end, it’s a chic fresh-air space that’s as stylish as the indoor bar and dining room.

Sit down inside or outside to sample the New American snacks that headline the menu at Dovetail. Start with the kimchi deviled eggs dusted with Korean pepper and the snap cracklin’, which are barbecue-spiced pork rinds. They pair well with the artisan cocktails and fine wines that flow from the bar. So do the entrees, most of which fall into three categories: Dock of the Bay (seafood), Field and Farm (chicken and steak), and One in the Hand (burgers and sandwiches). You can’t go wrong with the signature Dovetail burger loaded with cheddar cheese, caramelized onion aioli, and kimchi relish, all tucked neatly inside a pillowy brioche bun and served with garlic dill pickles and French fries on the side.
